DJ Cash Money Bio

Philadelphia’s DJ Cash Money has taken the hip-hip world by storm

Born and raised in Philadelphia, DJ Cash Money (aka Jerome Hewlett) is a turntablist, hip-hop artist and record producer. He impressed the world with his remarkable turntable skills inventing and perfecting several scratch forms, including the famous transformer scratch (mimicked the robotic sound effects from the cartoon series of the same name). A close friend and rival to the local boy and hip hop legend Jazzy Jeff, the pair spent their rise to fame DJ-ing at parties together as “Kings of Spin”. Cash is also credited with creating the Pee Wee Herman scratch and established the Chirp scratch.

In 1988 in partnership with MC Marvelous (aka Marvin Barrymen), Cash released the single Ugly People Be Quiet (co-produced by Herbie Azor) and his debut album Where’s The Party At? on Sleeping Bag Records. The turntablist also produced and remixed tracks for eminent artists such as Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes and Public Enemy.

By the early 90s Cash Money had joined the platinum-selling R&B act PM Dawn, where he remixed and produced the group’s gold-selling single Ways Of The Wind on Island Records. He also began producing and releasing several compilations such as The W.K.I.S Head Twister, Head Bangin’ Funk and Kickin Flava.

At the end of the day, DJ Cash Money is most famous for his incredible DJ skills having won major competitions and tournaments around the world such as the New Music Seminar Superman DJ Battle (1987), the DMC World DJ Championships (1988) and DMC Mixing Championship (80s). Today he relishes in judging similar contests worldwide while continuing to produce ravishing remixes.

His biggest accomplishment came in 1998 as the famous turntable manufacturer Technics made Cash Money the first inductee into the DJ Hall of Fame.
