90s rave duo Jez Williams and Tim Garbutt are still igniting the club scene with their effervescent mash up of dex n fx.
They are the legendary and pioneering production team from Leeds who have enjoyed unparalleled achievements over the past fifteen years as recording artists and DJs. They are also widely regarded as one of the first stadium house bands.
Starting out during the early 90s with their style and ambition firmly rooted in the underground, their unique productions quickly gained mainstream notoriety. Tim & Jez first experienced chart success with the singles What Can You Do For Me, Something Good and Believe In Me, productions which sampled Gwen Guthrie, Kate Bush and Human League respectively. Their self-entitled first album hit the streets in 1992 and rose to the Top 10 in the UK album sales chart.
Combined with numerous singles released for a variety of labels such as FFRR, Echo and Roadrunner in the US, and a second album entitled Two, Utah Saints have since enjoyed unprecedented success. Despite their notoriously sporadic release schedule and a wealth of unreleased material, which includes an album called Wired World and singles such as Star, Train and Rock, they have sold around 1.2 million singles and 350 000 albums. In conjunction with their own production Jez & Tim have written and produced with the likes of Edwin Starr, Chuck D, Krafty Kuts, A Skillz, Michael Stipe and Arthur Baker. Utah Saints have additionally worked on the soundtracks for both films and video games, most notably on the 1995 blockbuster Mortal Kombat and Carmageddon TDR2000 in 2000.
As testament to their universal, genre-crossing appeal Utah Saints have performed with an enviable range of the industry’s biggest bands and artists. As well as playing a ten show stadium tour with U2, Utah Saints have performed with the likes of The Shamen, Prodigy, Moby, Orbital, Joey Beltram, Take That, Rage Against The Machine, House Of Pain, Paul Oakenfold, DJ Tiesto, Iggy Pop, Carl Cox, Sasha & Digweed, Tim Sheridan, Grooverider, Roni Size, Krafty Kuts, Dave Clarke and Stanton Warriors. Artists that have received the Utah Saints remix treatment over the years include Simple Minds, Stone Roses, Annie Lennox, Swollen Members, Hawkwind, The Mission, Terrorvision, Flaming Lips and Blondie.
The Utah Saints have most recently been concentrating on their DJ-ing and have been combining a weekly residency in their hometown of Leeds with developing their own brand sugarbeatclub.com and maintaining an international DJ tour schedule. Purveying an eclectic mash-up of breaks, electro and drum & bass, Tim & Jez re-discovered their passions and returned to the studio in 2007.
Having temporarily stopped releasing music in 2003 to concentrate on their DJ sets and their own club brand sugarbeatclub.com, Utah Saints are now working on new material, a DJ mix album and a host of exclusive cuts for their DJ sets. Citing overwhelmingly loyal support and contractual freedom as two key factors which have encouraged them back to the studio look out for hot new original productions coming very soon.
